ABERDARES NATIONAL PARK

 

Size and Location:         

300 sq miles (765 sq km) within the Aberdares mountain range in the central highlands of Kenya, 110 miles (160 km) from Nairobi.

Attractions:                    

Black rhino populations, elephant hills, waterfalls, icy rivers, table mountains, Lesatima and Kinangop peaks, dense forest with alpine plants and moorlands.  

Animals to see:              

elephants, buffalo, leopard, endangered black rhino, black and white Colubus and antelope. Birds: over 100 species including African goshawk, Malachite and Tacazze sunbirds, and mountain buzzard. 

Recommended Activities:

Night game drive, nature scenery viewing, bird watching

Recommended time to go: 

December ~ February, and July ~October.

How to get there:          

by road (about 3hrs drive) from Nairobi

Where to Stay:                   

The Ark

   
Amboseli National Park

 

Size and Location:            

150 sq miles (390 sq km) and 265 miles (160km) from Nairobi.

Attractions:               

Viewing abundant animals, especially vast herds of elephants and birds with views of Mt. Kilimanjaro  on the southern boundary of the park. Also Masai culture and lifestyle.

Animals to see:           

Elephants,  black rhino, buffaloes, hippos, lions, antelopes, leopards, cheetahs, wildebeests, spotted and stripped hyenas, jackals, African wild dogs, baboons, and antelopes.

Recommended Activities: 

Game drive, Observation Hill for viewing Mt Kilimanjaro, walking safari

Recommended time to go:

December ~ March, June ~ October

How to get there:           

by road, about 4hrs drive from Nairobi, or by air, about 45 minutes flight from Nairobi. Also, by road from other parks/cities, or with a charter flight.

MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

 

Size and Location:        

125 square miles (320 sq km) in southern Kenya,  200 miles (310 km) from Nairobi. 

Attractions:             

Animal migration – millions of wildebeest and thousands of Zebras with predators crossing river Mara, views of the rift valley, extinct volcanoes, secretary birds and crowned cranes. 

Animals to see:           

Big five (Elephants, buffaloes, leopards, black rhinos and lions), cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, jackals, spotted hyenas, baboons, bush pigs, colubus monkeys, zebras, wildebeests, and antelopes (bushbuck, dik-dik, duiker, eland, Grant's Gazelle, Thomson's Gazelle, genet, gerenuk, hartebeest and more), and over 500 species of birds. 

Recommended Activities:

Game drive, balloon safari 

Recommended time to go: 

Mid July to October is the best time. December ~ February is an OK time (not the best). 

How to get there:          

About 6hrs drive from Nairobi, or by air, about 45 minutes flight from Nairobi. Also, by scheduled / charter flights from Nairobi, Samburu and Mount Kenya. Also, by road from those and other parks. 

Where to Stay:            

Mara Serena, Governors Camp, Little Governors Camp, Mara Interpid Club, Keekorok Lodge, Sarova Mara Camp, Mara Simba Lodge are in one of best areas of the parks to stay at

   

LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

 

Size and Location:         

70 sq miles (180 sq km) and its  100 miles (160 km) from Nairobi city.

Attractions:             

The shallow soda Lake Nakuru, Flamingos, acacia woodlands and savannah.

Animals to see:         

Buffalo, Rothschild giraffe, white rhino, leopard, waterbuck, warthogs, reedbuck and Thompson gazelles, and over 400 species of birds including over 1 million flamingoes.

Recommended Activities:

Game drives.

Recommended time to go:

December ~ March, June ~ ~October.

How to get there:          

By road from Nairobi, 2hrs ride. Also, by road from other parks.

Where to Stay: Sarova Nakuru Lodge, Lake Nakuru Lodge

   

samburu National Reserve, Bufallo springs and shaba national park

 

Size and Location:       

115 sq miles (298 sq km) in Central Kenya, and its about 220 miles (350km) from Nairobi

Attractions:              

The purple mountains, Buffallo springs, 5m+ crocodiles in the Uaso Nyiro river,  sandgrouse, gerenuk, zebra and reticulated girrafes.

Animals to see:         

Grevy’s zebra,  beisa oryx, crocodiles, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, lions, dikdik, warthogs, reticulated giraffe, sandgrouse, doves, guinea fowls.

Recommended Activities:

Game drives. 

Recommended time to go:

July ~ October, and also December ~March. 

How to get there:             

By road, 6hrs drive from Nairobi, or by scheduled/ charter flights from Nairobi, Masai Mara, and Mount Kenya, or by road form those ad other parks.

Where to Stay:                

Samburu Serena Lodge, Larsens Luxury Camp, Samburu Sopa Lodge, Samburu Lodge.

   

TSAVO (EAST & WEST) NATIONAL PARK

 

Size and Location:             

Tsavo East covers an area of 4,500sq miles (11,800sq km), while Tsavo West covers an area of 3,470 sq miles (9,000sq km), they are about 205miles (330km) and 150 miles (240kms) from Nairobi, respectively.

Attractions:                         

Big elephant herds, the confluence of rivers Tsavo and Athi to for the Galana river, the historic Aruba dam and ‘submarine’ views of hippos and marine life at Mzima springs.

Animals to see:                  

Velvet monkeys, elephant, leopard, lion, rhino and marine life.

Recommended Activities

Game drives and walking safaris     

Recommended time to go:

December ~ March.

How to get there:              

By road from Nairobi, or charter flights. 

Where to Stay:                    

Kilaguni Serena Lodge, Voi Lodge, Tsavo Safari Camp

   

MOUNT Kenya National Park

 

Size and Location:        

275 sq miles (710 sq km), and its about 105 miles (170kms) from Nairobi city. 

Attractions:                    

Gleaming snow covered peaks with breathtaking views while ascending and the nearby Sweetwaters Chimpanzee  orphanage. 

Animals to see:              

Chimpanzees, velvet monkeys, elephant, leopard, lion, rhino and marine life. 

Recommended Activities

Trekking 

Recommended time to go:

December ~ March, and June ~ October.

How to get there:             

by road from Nairobi, or by scheduled / charter flights from Nairobi, Mara and Samburu, or by road from those and other parks.
